As your waist to hip ratio increases, hormones in your body like testosterone, insulin, leptin, and ghrelin go through a series of negative changes, creating a vicious cycle that makes it easier for you to store fat, and harder for you to lose it, and when your waist starts getting bigger than your hips the medical issues start becoming more and more of an inevitable reality. On top of the health issues having a gut just doesn't make us look or feel all that great. But the good news is that just by making a few simple changes you can quickly drop belly fat, reduce the size of your waist, and turn this whole situation around. Now usually the first thing that beginners think of doing is to try targeting the area with crunches and situps. And the truth is that it's very unlikely that you'll be able to burn the fat directly from your stomach with exercise. For example, in one study only one leg was trained for 12 weeks while the other leg was not and there was no noticeable difference in fat loss between the two legs. (1) In another study, only one arm was trained for 12 weeks but there was no major difference in the amount of fat lost from one arm when compared to the other. (2) And when looking specifically at training the abs, the studies still show that performing abdominal exercises won't actually help you spot reduce the fat that's covering those abs up. (3) Now there was one very interesting recent anomaly study that did show otherwise and it found that participants that trained only their lower bodies experienced far more fat loss from their lower body, while other participants that only trained their upper body lost more fat from their upper body. (4) The researchers concluded that for the potential possibility of spot reduction working you need 3 things. Number one is high-intensity exercise, so for the abs that would be training them with heavyweights. This would be done to help release and mobilize the fat stores. But just because the fat stores are mobilized doesn't mean that the fat will actually be used for fuel and if it's not burnt through a process known as lipolysis the fat will return right back to where it originally was, so Number two, would be to follow up immediately with some kind of workout that burns a lot of calories like cardio or full-body interval training. And finally, the third condition is that you'll have to maintain an overall calorie deficit. Now even though some of you may want to give this a try... there's still no guarantee that you would burn more fat specifically from your belly because we need more studies to support these results. The majority of evidence still suggests that spot reduction is a myth and that overall body fat reduction that's achieved mostly by following a good diet is the best way to lose belly fat so the first evidence-based tip is to shift your attention to burning fat by improving your diet rather than concentrating on burning the fat with exercise. Now as soon as I say that you need to have a good diet the first question that pops into everyone's mind is what's the best diet that'll make me eat less and help me get rid of this gut, is it low carb or low fat? Nowadays most people assume that cutting carbs is the way to go. And the truth is low carb diets do have some unique advantages. Just by going on a low carb diet you'll probably automatically put your body into a caloric deficit, but on a low-fat diet, you'll most likely have to still track your calories to make sure. Another advantage is that some studies show that low carb dieting is more effective at reducing appetite and hunger than low-fat dieting(5) Low carb diets will also quickly lower insulin levels which is important for fat loss because insulin stimulates the production and storage of fat and it prevents your body from burning previously stored fat. Which style of training will help you burn more calories each session leading to greater fat loss? How about if you’re trying to build muscle, will have a separate chest day, back day, and a leg day allow you focus more on those specific muscles you’re trying to target ultimately helping you build more muscle and grow? Or can full-body training be just as effective for muscle growth? I’m going to answer all of these questions today and you may be a little surprised by some of these answers… So let’s begin with the pros and cons of each starting first with split training which is also referred to as “a bro split” and it’s usually the default type of training used by bodybuilders. With a very basic split training routine, you’ll be setting up your workout in a way where you’re focusing on only one muscle or one muscle group per day. So a typical basic split training routine might look something like this: Monday would be your chest day. Tuesday your back day. Wednesday would be your leg day. Then Thursday would be shoulders and abs, and then Friday would be biceps and triceps. Then Saturday and Sunday would be your two off days, and you would start the whole routine again on Monday by going back to chest. With full-body training, on the other hand, it's pretty obvious that you’re going be working your entire body every single session. That means unlike the bro split training you’ll be working your chest, back, arms, legs, and abs all in one day. Usually, a typical full-body training routine will have you working out three times a week with one day off in between each session. So Monday, Wednesday, and Friday would be full-body workouts and then the rest of the week you would have off. So which one of these is better for building muscle? Well, if we want to build muscle and increase our lean body mass faster we want to focus on increasing the volume of our workouts and volume is measured by 4 factors. Intensity, which is the amount of weight you’re lifting, frequency, which essentially is how many days a week you're working for a muscle group, and then there’s, of course, the total amount of sets, and reps that you’re performing. Increasing any of these 4 factors will help you build more muscle. Now immediately you may notice an advantage that full-body workouts provide over a basic split training routine. They require fewer days at the gym, only 3 instead of 5, and you’ll be targeting all the muscles in your body 3 times a week every week as opposed to split training where you’ll only be targeting each muscle once a week. That means that we’ll be increasing that frequency factor much higher with full-body training, and even if you do spend an entire workout session really beating up your chest with a split training routine, it shouldn’t take longer than a maximum of 3 to 4 days for your chest to recover, which means you’ll miss out on potential muscle gains, since you’ll be waiting 7 days to work your chest again instead of 4 days. So to make up for this lack of frequency other bro split routines have grown in popularity like push/pull routines, opposing body part routines, and upper/lower routines. A push/pull routine focuses on grouping your push muscles like your chest, shoulders, and triceps separately from your pull muscles like back and biceps. A typical routine may look like this: Day 1: Chest, shoulders, and triceps, Day 2: legs and abs, Day 3: Back and biceps, and Day 4 you would take off. Then you would repeat which would allow you to hit each muscle group twice a week. Now With an opposing body part routine, you would group two opposite muscle groups like your chest and back into one workout and each time you perform a set for your chest you would immediately perform another set with no break for your back. By super setting exercises like bench press and rows together you can still lift heavy for each exercise since each exercise works different muscles, and you can save time by pairing two sets together. An example routine would be Day 1: Chest and Back, Day 2: Would be a Leg day where you would be pairing quad and hamstring movements together and Day 3...

If forward head posture is left untreated it can cause neck & back pain, headaches, breathing issues, pinched nerves, and numbness in your hands. And the worst part is if you continue to maintain a forward head posture over the years you'll start to develop an abnormal curve in your upper spine and your body will build up scar tissue on the lower part of your neck known as a dowager's hump.... I think it's safe to say that nobody wants a hump on their back, not now and not later so today I'm going to show you the 5 key steps you'll need to take to fix this postural deviation once and for all. And the very first thing you'll want to do is a test to find out if you have a forward head posture, to begin with. This is a really easy test that only takes a minute. You'll stand with your back against a flat wall, making sure to touch the wall with both your heals and your shoulder blades. As those 4 spots touch the wall check where your head naturally goes. If the back of your head is touching the wall or is pretty close to touching the wall, you probably don't have much forward head posture. However, if your head naturally shifts forward and ends up inches away from the wall then you do have forward head posture and the further your head is from the wall the more important it is for you to start fixing it right away. This is because as your head comes forward, your shoulders will also round forward, and then to see straight ahead you'll have to compensate by tilting your head up. In combination, all of this will cause certain muscle groups to shorten and tighten up including your sternocleidomastoid which runs along the front and the side of your neck, your suboccipital muscles behind your head at the base of your skull, as well as your scalene muscles, upper traps, chest, and your lats...all of them will shorten and become tighter, further reinforcing this bad posture. So step number 2 is to begin releasing and stretching the tight muscles and we're going to start first with the sternocleidomastoid. To release this muscle you'll first locate it by looking for the v-shaped muscle that runs from your collar bones up along the sides of your neck. you're going to massage this muscle by gently pinching it between your fingers working your way up and down along the entire muscle. Massage each side for about a minute, and then you'll move on to stretching it by first placing your hand over your collar bone and pulling the skin down. Then lift up and rotate your head and your chin diagonally to the opposite side. Holding this position will also stretch out the tight anterior scalene. Make sure you Hold it for 30 seconds before switching sides and then repeat for 3 rounds. after that, for your next stretch, you'll want to grab the opposite side of your head with one hand and tilt your ear towards that raised shoulder while holding your opposite arm behind your back. Hold that stretch for about 30 seconds on each side, and again repeat for 3 rounds. Now for the suboccipital muscles, you'll want to first release them by using a massage ball or something similar like a lacrosse ball. Lay down with your back against the floor and place the ball behind your head at the base of your skull. Then roll the ball along the area by gently tilting your head up and down and side to side. You want to do this for about 2 minutes and make sure you roll out each side. If you don't have a ball, keep in mind you can also simply massage these muscles with your fingers. Once those muscles are relaxed you'll stretch them out by tucking your chin back and looking down while gently applying downward pressure on the back of your head for 30 seconds and then repeat 3 times. finally, for the chest and lats, you can stretch your chest by placing your arms at 90-degree angles against the frame of a doorway before leaning through. And Unfortunately, most guys don't realize that repeating the same common bicep curling exercises will only target one part of their biceps potentially helping that part grow bigger, but not really helping their arms grow wider. This is because the appearance of your bicep isn't just determined by one single muscle. You see the bicep itself has two heads including the long head on the outside of your arm, which makes up the majority of the peak and the shorthead on the inside which helps provide thickness. But The other often-overlooked muscle that is largely responsible for width and thickness is the brachialis which sits right behind the long head of the bicep and even though it's hidden under the bicep, from a front angle the belly of the brachialis actually protrudes out the side of your arm, so training the brachialis with the right exercises will help directly increase the width of your arms. That's why for our first exercise I want to show you one of my favorite ways to target the brachialis, and that's by using the hammer curl bar also known as a tricep bar. Now if you don't have this barbell at your gym I'm going to show you another way you can do this in a sec, but most gyms will have it. So to begin this exercise you would load up the bar, and grab it by the neutral grips in the center of the bar. Then stand up, lean slightly forward and while keeping your elbows fixed close to your sides curl the bar up towards your chest. Now Once you get to the top of the contraction you want to squeeze your biceps for a second before slowly returning the barbell back down and repeating for reps. Since we're using a barbell we do want to go heavy but make sure that the weight isn't so heavy that you're swinging backward to gather momentum for each rep and make sure that you're not cheating by raising your elbows forward and using your shoulder strength instead of your brachialis. Now in general Curling with your hands in a neutral, and pronated position rather than the more common supinated position will help target your brachialis to a much greater extent. That's why our second exercise uses that same neutral hand placement, it's the alternating crossbody hammer curl and for this one you don't need a fancy bar, you only need two dumbbells. To get started you would grab dumbbells and hold them in a neutral position at your sides. Once again you want to lean slightly forward to help take your shoulder out of the movement and to put more constant tension on the brachialis. Then you would curl the dumbbell up, but rather than coming straight up for a regular hammer curl you're going to come across your body aiming to bring the dumbbell up to your opposite pec. Then slowly lower the dumbbell back down and repeat the same thing on the other side, alternating back and forth for reps. Another great exercise that follows a similar movement pattern involves the use of a cable machine and the rope attachment. Now, most people perform this exercise by gripping the rope with a neutral hand position and then curling the rope up and down. But I find it a lot more effective to do it either on an incline or by just using one arm at a time because that will once again allow you to come all the way across your body. So to perform this exercise with one arm you would use the same rope attachment but only grab it with one hand. Then you would curl across your body aiming to bring the rope to your opposite pec just like we did with the dumbbells before. On the other hand, If you want to do this exercise on an incline you would raise the pully up high and lay back on a bench that's set to about a low 30-degree angle. Then with your elbows raised, you would hold both ends of the rope in a neutral position and then you would curl the rope in towards your face. Even though these exercises may look similar to hammer curls you're definitely going to feel it working your brachialis a little differently because of the different angles and the unique constant tension.

But The other often-overlooked muscle that is largely responsible for width and thickness is the brachialis which sits right behind the long head of the bicep and even though it's hidden under the bicep, from a front angle the belly of the brachialis actually protrudes out the side of your arm, so training the brachialis with the right exercises will help directly increase the width of your arms. That's why for our first exercise I want to show you one of my favorite ways to target the brachialis, and that's by using the hammer curl bar also known as a tricep bar. Now if you don't have this barbell at your gym I'm going to show you another way you can do this in a sec, but most gyms will have it. So to begin this exercise you would load up the bar, and grab it by the neutral grips in the center of the bar. Then stand up, lean slightly forward and while keeping your elbows fixed close to your sides curl the bar up towards your chest. Now Once you get to the top of the contraction you want to squeeze your biceps for a second before slowly returning the barbell back down and repeating for reps. Since we're using a barbell we do want to go heavy but make sure that the weight isn't so heavy that you're swinging backward to gather momentum for each rep and make sure that you're not cheating by raising your elbows forward and using your shoulder strength instead of your brachialis. Now in general Curling with your hands in a neutral, and pronated position rather than the more common supinated position will help target your brachialis to a much greater extent. That's why our second exercise uses that same neutral hand placement, it's the alternating crossbody hammer curl and for this one you don't need a fancy bar, you only need two dumbbells. To get started you would grab dumbbells and hold them in a neutral position at your sides. Once again you want to lean slightly forward to help take your shoulder out of the movement and to put more constant tension on the brachialis. Then you would curl the dumbbell up, but rather than coming straight up for a regular hammer curl you're going to come across your body aiming to bring the dumbbell up to your opposite pec. Then slowly lower the dumbbell back down and repeat the same thing on the other side, alternating back and forth for reps. Another great exercise that follows a similar movement pattern involves the use of a cable machine and the rope attachment. Now, most people perform this exercise by gripping the rope with a neutral hand position and then curling the rope up and down. But I find it a lot more effective to do it either on an incline or by just using one arm at a time because that will once again allow you to come all the way across your body. So to perform this exercise with one arm you would use the same rope attachment but only grab it with one hand. Then you would curl across your body aiming to bring the rope to your opposite pec just like we did with the dumbbells before. On the other hand, If you want to do this exercise on an incline you would raise the pully up high and lay back on a bench that's set to about a low 30-degree angle. Then with your elbows raised, you would hold both ends of the rope in a neutral position and then you would curl the rope in towards your face. Even though these exercises may look similar to hammer curls you're definitely going to feel it working your brachialis a little differently because of the different angles and the unique constant tension.
